Smith knew that Waxwings occurred in Guernsey although he had never seen them himself and relied upon reports by his collector, MacCulloch, who wrote to him 'I have known the Bohemian Waxwing killed here on several occasions, but have not the dates'. Dobson records 2 birds, one at Fermain on 12 December 1946 and another in Mount Row on January 19 1947. The next record is not until 1965 when Guernsey experienced an irruption with up to 40 sightings mostly in the St Peter Port area. Since then there have been sporadic records of birds which tend to coincide with irruption years. The following are in the period under review:

1970: 1 at Ivy Gates, 6-7 December

1974: 1 at Les Amballes, 18-20 November

1974: 1 at Jerbourg, 17 November

1990: 1 at Paradis Quarry, 17 November

1996: 1 in a garden at Rue des Grons, St Martin, 3-4 February
