Smith records this species as "probably occurring sparingly every year" and this description is just as accurate for the period under review as it was then. The majority of birds occur in autumn, most of which are juveniles. Virtually all records come from the west coast and in the autumn singles or groups of up to 2-3 birds can be seen throughout August to November. An average of 10 records are received each year from a wide variety of locations along the West Coast, with the Vazon-Fort le Crocq area providing the majority of records.

Very few are seen in the winter months and it is not until the spring that birds pass through the islands again. Two peaks are seen in spring due to birds from different populations passing through. The first occurs during in late February and March and are birds which winter in western Europe returning to breeding areas in Greenland and Canada. The later peak refers to birds breeding in Siberia returning from wintering areas in West Africa.
